March 8, 1931 — December 2, 2022

Betty L. Thompson of Elgin died Friday, December 2, 2022, surrounded by family at her home on Gordon Creek Road at the age 91.

Interment will be at the Elgin Cemetery with a service to be announced in the spring or summer.  Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center of La Grande.

Betty Louise Follett was born in La Grande on March 8, 1931, the third of six children, first daughter, of Jesse King “J.K.” and Florence Naomi (Hug) Follett.  She was raised near Elgin and attended her earlier school years at the Pine Grove School until they merged with the Elgin District when she was in high school.

Betty worked as a waitress and housekeeper when she was young.  On her birthday in 1956 she was married to Lawrence “Larry” E. Thompson in Elgin and she loved riding with him in his log truck.  She was a full-time mother and later grandmother, helping to raise the next generation as well.  In her later years she loved going for rides in the country, especially in the hills and forests.  She was an avid booster of school sports and loved watching her grandchildren participate, even up until just days before her death.

Betty was baptized in the Latter-day Saints Church in Elgin.

Surviving relatives include her husband of 66 years, Larry of Elgin; children and their spouses, Claudia and Jack Fellows of Milton-Freewater, Arlene and Rex Culver of Milton-Freewater, Rex and Jan Thompson of Elgin, Toni and Gary Lathrop of Elgin; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Roger Follett of Sheridan and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J.K. and Florence Follett, siblings, Warren and George Follett, Reta Hindman, Claude Follett, grandson, Todd Culver and a great-grandbaby Kael D. Lathrop.

Contributions in memory of Betty Thompson may be made to the Elgin Husky Wrestling Club in care of the Elgin School District.
