Jacqueline Preston, age 71, died Monday, July 11, 2022, at her home in Union. A service was held Saturday, July 16, at the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Union.

Jackie was born on Sept. 1, 1950, in La Grande, the daughter of LeRoy Junior “Bill” and Dianne Mary (Carlgen) Carlyle. They eventually moved to Portland, where Jackie graduated with the Wilson High School class of 1968. She later returned to the Grande Ronde Valley and worked for the Union Market, The Hut Cafe and Community Connection. She worked many years as a housekeeper for the Grande Ronde Retirement Residence, where she really enjoyed the interaction with the residents and staff. Jackie was active in the Union Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and really enjoyed family history. She also enjoyed participating in the Union County Historical Society and worked for a time at the Union County Museum. Jackie liked gardening, cooking, sewing, photography and especially spending time with family.

Surviving family includes her children, Benjamin Witten, Andrew Witten of Union, Margaret Hetterley of La Grande and LaRee Smith of Cove; several grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; sister, Jennifer Jones of Mason, Ohio; brother, Randolf Carlyle of Soldotna, Alaska; and other relatives.  Besides her parents, Jackie was preceded in death by a son, Matthew Witten; a daughter, Katharine Witten; and brothers, Bill Carlyle and Robert Williams.

Contributions in memory of Jacqueline Preston may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation of the Pacific Northwest, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America or the National Federation of the Blind, all charities that were near and dear to her.
