Richard Gene Raff Sr, age 87, born in Nampa, Idaho, departed this world on July 17, 2025, in Federal Way, WA. It is with deep sorrow and great admiration, we mourn the loss of such an accomplished teacher, father, and friend.

Richard’s educational journey started in La Grande, Oregon, with a four-year standard high school education. It continued with distinguished honorable service in the United States Navy; an experience regarded as one of the most significant milestones of his life. Naval educational programs accredited him in APS 38 Radar technologies and friend-or-foe inflight communications. A Bachelor of Arts degree was next from San Jose State, signed by the Governor of California, Ronald Reagan, on June 13, 1969. Finally, Richard earned Master's in Education from Oregon State University in 1988.

While at San Jose State Richard took over with teaching responsibilities, due to a professor’s illness, which fueled his teaching aspirations. Later, those goals were realized at Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls where he taught electronics. He was well known as hard but fair teacher. His Master’s degree deepened his understanding of advanced learning techniques. Upon moving to the Seattle area, Richard continued teaching by joining Boeing, where he achieved notable success as an auto pilot and maintenance training instructor. This included training international airlines employees all over the world.

Richard was a passionate outdoorsman who loved spending time in nature. His skills ranged from fly fishing and fly tying to reading maps, hiking, and exploring challenging mountain trails. His enthusiasm for outdoor adventures was truly inspiring.

Richard Gene Raff Sr is survived by his beloved children: Richard Gene Raff Jr. and Sheryl Lin Raff. His grandchildren are Christopher James Raff and Fredric Allen Elliott. Richard also leaves behind his nephews: Dan Turley, Mark Turley, David Turley, Mike Turley, and Matthew Turley, Darin Webb, Les Webb, and Randy Webb. His niece Lisa Butler. As well as, five great- nephews, thirteen great-nieces, eight great-great-nephews, and ten great-great-nieces.

As we say farewell, we remember that grief is the price of love—a measure of the depth of our connection. In mourning, we celebrate the gift of having known such a soul, and we find comfort in one another as we share stories, laughter, and tears.
