Roy enlisted in the military and served the country during World War II in the Army Air Force. He was stationed in the South Pacific during his military service. Roy married his sweetheart, Rachel Stanaway, on July 18, 1946, in Wenatchee, Wash.

While working for the U.S. Forest Service, Roy continued his education at Wenatchee Valley College. In 1960, he took his family to Pullman where he attended forestry school at Washington State University. He received his bachelor of science degree in forestry and range management in 1963.

They worked on botany surveys, tree-planting, collecting seed cones and were hosts for the U.S. Forest Service at the Kirkwood Ranch on the Snake River.

He served for several years on the ski patrol and as an avalanche control officer at Stevens Pass Ski Area in Washington.

Roy was an avid outdoorsman and taught each of his grandchildren to snow ski, hike the mountain trails and identify native plants found along the trails.

His family said, "Roy professed his love and belief to his heavenly Father as a young man and remained faithful in his personal love of God for over 70 years."
