Vernal Fay "Vern" Olson, age 88, of Alicel Lane died October 13, 2013 at his home. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Summerville Cemetery Chapel. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.
Vern was born on November 16, 1924, the son of Christopher and Amanda (Fitchell) Olson in Hurdsfield, North Dakota. He was raised and educated in North Dakota and after his education was complete he traveled all over the south by rail including Texas, New Mexico, and California. He lived in Seattle for a time and briefly in Pendleton where he met is future wife. On August 14, 1944 he married Betty Jean Traverso in La Grande where they made their home and farmed on Alicel Lane. He also worked at Boise Cascade until his retirement in 1986.
Vern was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Oregon Cattleman's Association. He enjoyed horseback riding and riding 4-wheelers. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather to three generations. He loved telling stories about his past, especially of the times traveling. The family enjoyed many times at their family cabin at Indian Creek.
Survivors include his children, Diane Higley of La Grande, Verna and Steve Olsen of Island City and Terry & Toni Olson of Elgin; brother Floyd Olson of Seattle; sister, Esther and Clarence Habbestad of Seattle; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife in January 2009; a sister, Helen Griffin; his parents; brother Clinton Olson and son-in-law, Dave Higley.
