Virgil Weir Obituary

Virgil "Bill" Weir, age 89, of La Grande, died Thursday, June 27, 2002 at a care facility in Haines.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Committal and interment will follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday, July 1, 2002 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Weir was born on December 2, 1912, the son of Virgil and Edith (Colburn) Weir in Sparta, Oregon. He was educated in Sparta and married Ruby Dean there. The marriage later ended in divorce. He later worked in Huntington for the Union Pacific Railroad where he met and married Betty Graham on August 14, 1944. They moved to La Grande in the 1950's and he worked as a brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad. She preceded him in death in 1971. On October 23, 1972 he married Marjorie Dial and she preceded him in death on May 22, 1997.

Mr. Weir was an active member of the New Life Center in La Grande. He was a member of the Gideon's and the Men's Fellowship. He was a 4-H leader for many years. Mr. Weir was an advocate for those who lost limbs and was a charitable person in all aspects of his life. He was always helping others in various ways, including repairing appliances.

Mr. Weir enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, horses, spending time in the mountains and snowmobile riding. He loved to attend family gatherings and was extremely family oriented. He loved to go to new places.

Survivors include his children, Tom & Joni Weir of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Susie Thompson of La Grande and Rosalie & Charles Gibson of Mead, Washington; nine grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; siblings, Marjorie & Benny Miller of Madras, Oregon, Winnie Hoover of Beaverton, Oregon, Cecil Weir of Citrus Heights, California, Lela & Grant Shold of Richland, Oregon, John & Donna Weir of Richland, Oregon, Mary & Andy Zaglow of Warren, Oregon, Velma & Chester Stewart of Oregon City and Fern & Stacy Marriot of Vancouver, Washington; and other relatives and friends. Sons, Leland, Duane and Sidney and siblings, Mildred, Alma and Orville preceded him in death.
